A field day was organized on the 5th Feb 2007, at Venkatenahalli village, close to Bangalore, to showcase the activities carried out by the rural Women Self help Groups on ornamental fish breeding, rearing, feed preparation on a backyard concept utilizing local resources supported by appropriate institutional linkages including market support. This demonstration was well appreciated by all the major stakeholders and members of various Self Help Groups representing districts of Greater Bangalore, Kolar and Tumkur.
Backyard Ornamental Fish Production is a sub-project sanctioned under the Challenge grant of the Sustainable Agri-Foods Systems project. This innovative approach provided forward and backward linkages to the SHG’s to rear ornamental fish with active institutional support and participation of Governmental (Fisheries Department) and private agencies (Aqua Rich). On an average each woman member of SHG earned a net income of Rs. 450 ($10) per month with their underemployed labour. The demand for ornamental fishery is also on the rise from different urban quarters.
The project places on record the tireless efforts of Dr Seenappa, Professor of Fishery Extension Education of the UAS, Bangalore in this endeavour.
